Sandos Caracol Eco Resort Review: A Family-Friendly Resort for Nature Lovers and Active Travelers

Planning a vacation for a large, multi-generational family can be challenging, especially when affordability, activities, and varying ages are all part of the equation. I recently experienced Sandos Caracol Eco Resort firsthand while traveling with a group of 17 people, and I’m happy to share my honest review to help families decide if this resort is the right fit.

Why We Chose Sandos Caracol Eco Resort

This trip was initially inspired by a potential destination wedding, with a strong focus on finding a resort that would work well for a large family, including two adults and five children in one household alone. With children of varying ages in our group, we needed a resort that offered:

  • Affordable pricing

  • Plenty of on-site activities

  • Options for different interests and energy levels

The water park, eco-focused setting, and extensive activity list made Sandos Caracol a strong contender.

As a travel advisor, I carefully review guest feedback before recommending any resort. While some online reviews raised concerns about food quality, slow service, and illness, I also know that travel experiences are subjective, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our stay.

First Impressions & Resort Atmosphere

From the moment we arrived, the lush jungle surroundings stood out. The resort truly feels like it’s immersed in nature, with winding paths, cenotes, and abundant wildlife. During our stay we regularly saw monkeys, coatis, turtles, and other animals, a unique experience that we all loved.

Check-In Experience

Check-in did take close to one hour, which aligns with what many reviews mention. However, with a relaxed mindset, drinks in hand, and the kids exploring with another adult in our group, the wait felt manageable.

Tip: Families with young children should bring activities or snacks for check-in to help pass the time.

Accommodations: Eco Family Superior Room

We stayed in an Eco Family Superior Room, which included:

  • One king-sized bed

  • One bunk bed

  • A spacious, clean layout

The room was comfortable and functional for a family stay. I would advise that the shower area is wide open so if you want to bring a cheap shower curtain to hang in that area, you may want to do so for extra privacy. One of the highlights for me was relaxing on the balcony each morning and watching wildlife pass by.

Hot Water & Accessibility Notes

Some guests mention inconsistent hot water, we experienced this briefly, but found that pulling the handle straight out and slightly to the left and allowing the water to run for a few minutes resolved the issue due to the design of the resort’s plumbing system.

If you or a family member has mobility challenges, I recommend requesting a ground-floor room, as the resort is not fully accessibility-friendly in upper-level accommodations.

Dining Experience: What to Expect

The dining experience at Sandos Caracol is best described as adequate, but not exceptional.

Buffet Dining

The buffet always offered something to eat, but food quality and temperature were inconsistent compared to North American standards. This was the biggest drawback of the resort for our group, and we were mindful about food choices.

À La Carte & Lunch Options

  • El Nido was a reliable lunch spot with pizza, tacos, burritos, and excellent guacamole

  • The resort offers unlimited à la carte dining, though reservations can be difficult for large groups

  • We successfully dined at Fogo de Brazil and Los Lirios, both of which were excellent

Reservations are typically released around midnight and again at 7 a.m., so planning ahead is key.

Health & Safety

None of our group experienced foodborne illness. We took preventative measures before travel (such as Dukoral) and recommend speaking with a pharmacist about options that may be appropriate for you.

Guests should also know that Uber Eats delivers to the resort, offering a convenient alternative for variety. Coordination through the front desk is required for security access.

Pools, Beach & Water Activities

During our stay, part of the water park was temporarily closed due to electrical issues. Even so, there was no shortage of activities.

Pools & Amenities

  • Tortuga Pool: quieter, family-friendly, and a favorite among kids

  • Main pool: large, lively, and well-staffed with activities

  • Smoothie bar: a highlight for younger guests

As an eco-focused resort, Sandos Caracol does not provide plastic straws, so I would recommend guests should bring reusable tumblers.

Beach Experience

The beach area features a man-made break that reduces waves and seaweed, creating calm swimming conditions. Complimentary snorkel gear and kayaks are available (kayaks for 30 minutes at a time), and many in our group enjoyed kayaking during the stay.

Activities & Entertainment

Sandos Caracol offers an impressive variety of included activities:

  • Snorkeling in cenotes (bring your own mask or rent from the beach)

  • Exploring on-site caves

  • Pool tables and ping pong at the sports bar

Evening Entertainment

Nightly shows were consistently enjoyable. Highlights included:

  • Pirate show

  • Coco

  • Beauty and the Beast

  • Fire show

The resort also hosts night markets on select evenings, featuring food and crafts.

Kids Club

The kids club was popular with the children in our group. The staff were attentive and engaging, and the kids loved the activities and crafts offered throughout the week.

Important notes for parents:

  • Children 4 and under require proof of age

  • Socks are required for drop-off

This is a great option for parents seeking some child-free time during their vacation.

Departure Tip

Be aware transfers have 40 minutes from pick up time to come and pick you up on the way back to the airport. If they do not show up, let your service provider know and if you need to arrange alternate transport, keep a receipt that is time stamped. I strongly recommend arriving at the airport at least three hours before departure. Baggage drop lines can be lengthy, and extra time helps reduce stress.

Final Verdict: Who This Resort Is Best For

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort is best suited for families who:

  • Love nature and wildlife

  • Want a wide range of activities for all ages

  • Are looking for good value rather than a luxury foodie experience

While dining may not be the resort’s strongest feature, its eco atmosphere, family-friendly design, and activity offerings make it a solid choice for larger families and multi-generational groups.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes! Especially for families who prioritize experiences, nature, and affordability.

If you’re considering Sandos Caracol Eco Resort and want help deciding if it’s the right fit for your family, I’d be happy to guide you through the planning process and tailor recommendations based on your specific needs.
